A family Easter activity

A little garden, a story full of hope.

Build a tiny garden scene, retell the first Easter morning, and make room for the questions and joy your children bring.

Simple things from home are all you need.

Make the garden
A small garden and an open tombA simple drawing of a garden hill, an open tomb, a rolled stone, and spring flowers.
A garden, an open tomb, and a stone to roll aside together.

Begin with the Easter morning story.

Choose a Bible and read Matthew 28:1–10 together, or tell the story in your own words. The women came to Jesus’ tomb and heard the joyful news that he had risen. In Matthew’s account, they then met Jesus and hurried to share the news.

As you read, let your child listen, wonder, and ask questions. There is no need to make the moment complicated; a few household things can give little hands a way to follow along.

Set up a little garden.

Gather what you have nearby. Imagination can fill in the rest.

  • A small tray, shallow dish, or folded towel for the garden
  • Green paper or fabric to suggest grass and plants
  • A small cup laid on its side, or folded paper shaped into a tomb
  • One large, smooth stone to roll away; use a soft ball for younger children
  1. 01

    Make a quiet garden.

Spread out the green paper or fabric. Lay the cup or paper tomb on its side, then place the stone at its entrance.

  2. 02

Tell the story with the pieces.

Remember the women arriving at the tomb. Invite your child to move a small figure, or simply point as you retell what happened that morning.

  3. 03

    Roll the stone away.

Let your child move the stone and look inside the open tomb. Share the good news together: Jesus is alive. Take turns retelling the story in your own words.

Wonder together.

Choose one question or let the conversation wander. Listening is part of the activity, too.

How do you think the women felt when they arrived?

  • 03

What good news did they hear?

  • 04

Who could you share a little Easter joy with today?
