An everyday family practice

A small moment of faith at the table.

A meal or snack can become a gentle place to pause, read a little Scripture, and hear what is on each person’s heart. Keep it simple and make it your own.

Try the five-minute rhythm

Let the table be a place to notice and listen.

Christian faith can be part of the small rhythms already in family life. There is no need to plan a lesson or find the perfect words. A verse, one open question, and a little time together are enough to begin.

Try it at breakfast, a snack, or supper.

Choose a moment that already happens in your day, and keep each step brief.

Today’s readingPsalm 136:1 — a short invitation to give thanks to God for his goodness.

  1. 01

    Pause for a breath.

When everyone has a seat, take one quiet breath together. A lively table is fine; this can be just a few seconds.

  2. 02

    Read a short verse.

Open a family Bible to Psalm 136:1, or choose a verse your family already knows. Read it slowly, then say in your own words what you heard.

  3. 03

    Share one small good thing.

Ask, “What is one little thing you are thankful for today?” Parents and children can each share, give a one-word answer, or pass.

  4. 04

Close with thanks, if you like.

Anyone who wants to can offer a short thank-you prayer. You can also finish with a quiet moment or simply carry on with the meal.

Let children join in their own way.

A younger child might name a favorite food or point to something nearby. An older child might choose the verse or ask a question. Listening quietly counts, too.
